Exploring the Beauty of Vietnamese Folklore

Legends and Beliefs

Vietnamese folklore is a priceless treasure, preserved and passed down through generations. Legends and myths carry lessons about morality, courage, and wisdom. From the legend of Son Tinh – Thuy Tinh, depicting the struggle between humans and nature, to the story of An Duong Vuong and Mi Chau – Trong Thuy, reflecting historical tragedies, all contribute to a diverse and rich cultural landscape.

Folk beliefs also play an important role, with the coexistence of indigenous beliefs and Buddhism, Taoism. Rituals and customs associated with agricultural life demonstrate respect for deities, ancestors, and nature.

Folk Songs, Proverbs, and Folk Music

Folk songs, proverbs, and folk music are distinctive forms of Vietnamese folklore, reflecting the lives and emotions of the Vietnamese people. Sweet and profound folk songs express love for the homeland, family affection, and romantic love. Proverbs, with their concise and succinct phrases, contain philosophies of life and folk wisdom. Folk music, with its melodious and profound melodies, reflects the working life and activities of the people.

Example: The folk song “My body is like a peach silk, fluttering in the market, I don’t know whose hand it will fall into” depicts the beauty and fate of women in the old society.

Traditional Festivals

Traditional festivals are an integral part of Vietnamese folklore. Each festival has its own meaning, linked to history, beliefs, and community life. From the bustling spring festivals to festivals commemorating national heroes, all contribute to a vibrant atmosphere rich in national identity.

Example: The Gióng festival demonstrates the patriotism and anti-aggression spirit of our nation. Tet Nguyen Dan is an occasion for families to reunite and welcome the New Year.

Folk Arts

Vietnamese folk art is incredibly rich and diverse, including forms such as: Dong Ho folk paintings, Hang Trong paintings, Bat Trang ceramics, embroidery, weaving… Each folk art piece possesses its own beauty, demonstrating the skill and talent of artisans and reflecting the spiritual life of the community.

Preservation and promotion of folklore is the responsibility of every Vietnamese citizen. We need to actively learn and pass on these precious cultural values to future generations.
